shakespeare 201

Ok, i gotta roll up my sleeves and get all miss-arty-pissy-pants for a sec.

On the radio, there was an older actress named celeste hall speaking live from the press club on c-span. i was flipping throught the dial when i heard her adressing the importance of the arts in a child's schooling experience and she was answering audience's questions.

One of the questions was 'how can shakespeare help to get me a job with microsoft?' and the question was rendered in a snotty now-i've-got-you- let's see-how-you-figure-this-out way.

The problem is, that question was totally missing the point. The question isn't how shakespeare helps you get a job with microsoft, it's how it helps you to open your eyes to other possibilities to other options that *aren't* microsoft.

There will always be people in the world who will like shakespeare, and those who won't. Just as there are others who would love to work for a corporation like microsoft, and those who would rather have all of their teeth pulled. I must divuldge that i am of the latter, and also, coincidentally, am making a living off of good ol' Bill (uh, shakespeare, not gates...) himself.

Maybe by reading shakespeare, you'll find a knack for language, for music, for poetry, for writing. Maybe by attending a production or two, there will be something in the translation or interpretation that will spark an intrest in history. Maybe you'll recognize something in a character that you admire or loathe and are quick to imitate or vow never to come close to.

Comparing Shakespeare to Microsoft is comparing an oak tree to a soap dish. But it's good that both are there, just as, you know...options. which really, is what life is all about isn't it?
