my friend michelle k

yesterday i recieved an envelope at work, addressed from michelle k. my best friend and roommate from college whom i never hear enough from. mostly it's my fault. i'm really bad about sending emails and letters and phone calls and add a move to that and...well...
but seeing her name on the envelope was excitement enough. although i turned to eric and said "um....is it wrong to hope that the words 'i'm pregnant' aren't in this envelope?'.
eric shook his head yes and before other people click their tongues against their teeth in the international sign of bad friendship, i am happy for her (she is pregnant, by the way. of course she is. )
and now i have three reasons to visit pittsburgh. but still....i know it's immature of me but no one can deny that when a baby enters the picture, the dynamics change.
i can only imagine how excited her mom is....her whole family is close in a way that seems unnatural by comparison of my family. when michelle bought a house 5 years ago, she chose one (it's amazingly cute!) 3 blocks from her sister. and together i'm pretty sure they live less than a mile from her parents. john grew up in bethel park which is close to the area too...
so...i dunno....the thought of michelle as a mom kinda excites me i guess. michelle has this huge, electrifying natural grin that's just....always there. she also has no sense of smell. none. she can't smell anything which came in handy when she dated jason in college. jason whose mere smell woke me up from a nap on the sofa of our apartment.
i remember the first time michelle ever tried whiskey. and all the flasks of canadian club that followed. and her peculiar way of folding toilet paper. and when my brother had a seizure in college and she rode her bike with me up to the hospital and the park that we sat in. that weekend cemented our friendship i think. and then i moved in with her for the second half of my junior year of college after just completely wrecking the dorm room i was in. and by completely wrecking, i mean i removed the short dressers and couldn't put them back so i balanced on one coffee cans and crossed my fingers SO HARD i can't believe they didn't fuse together when the RA was checking out the room and didn't find any damage. i can't imagine what the person who lived there after me thought.
i remember the illicit toaster oven and the mice we got as pets. and her laying her wet jeans to dry on my bed.
and the sweatshirt her mom made me. and then the apartment we shared with crazy amy my senior year...and the trip to italy...and the midnight walks around indiana pennsylvania drawing on stuff with chalk. and the dozens of pictures of us with the jimmy stewart statue.
i guess we'll have to take baby there and start the tradition anew!
