comics and eagles
yesterday i received a pair of orange jack-o-lantern faced slippers from mom. they have little orange treads on them so you don't slip around your wood floors all risky business style. and in fact, when i put them on they sounded all "pock-pock-pock" like that noise steve martin makes in Roxanne. let's take a second to reflect on the genius that use to be steve martin....like everything from canyon and before. let's not dwell on the cheaper by the dozens and the pink panther remakes which for me, is about 12 dozen cardinal comedy rules broken right there. oh steve martin....how i loved ye. small press expo was good. very crowded. mildly annoying. i may have insulted tony millionaire....in fact, let me see if i can google a picture so i'll know for sure. OH! wasn't him. good. then i have no idea who i may have inadvertantly offended as i tried to buy the new Jason book at the fantagraphics table (by the way? all the shit that fantagraphics is coming out with now? amazing. i mean, even beyond the love and rockets redux. i mean, like all the chris ware releases and the peanuts anthologies and the histories of alternative comics. really really good stuff.) and Jason's 'left bank gang' is great. actually laughed out loud a few times. his stuff is usually pantomime with little reliance on dialouge. this is almost all dialogue...hemmingway, fitzgerald, joyce, and ezra pound are all cartoonists living in paris and hemmingway devises a plot for them to make some quick money... i highly recommend it. i was sick and spaced out on cold medicine with a stuffy nose and stuffy ears and the first thing i bought was a marc bell book and people behind the tables kept trying to talk to me but i was awkward and weird and vaugely sick and didn't really want to chat which sucks becuase usually a cute boy wanting to talk about comics? fuck yeah. but a sick beth b? fuck no. so my reading plate is overflowing. tuesday miss beck gave me a book i've been drooling over for years (lynda Barry's the good times are killing me) and thursday i used my filled-up big spender card at atomic books and picked up the long awaited kramer's Ergo and then yesterday i went a little nutty at the expo. OH! also, this morning, i saw an eagle! i was outside checking on my pumpkins and i heard a lot of rustling up in a nearby tree so i look up and this huge (if we had been walking down the street together, he would have totally come up to over my knee.) eagle is trying to land on some top branches. it was probably a bald eagle, but it seemed really really white with a little bit of brown. i said "HOLY CRAP!!!" really loud and it left. seriously neat tho.
