when the messenger is hot

so there's this book called "when the messenger is hot" by elizabeth crane.
and it's a brilliant book. highly recommended.
it's a bunch of short stories loosely (err, not so loosely?) about her and her life, and the story the title comes from is her (damn it. i can't reference the book because i lent it to ryan to read and ryan f-ing took it when he moved. ok, so i'm probably going to get some details a little wrong, so betsy crane, if you ever see this, i'm sorry. and i'm buying a new copy asap.)
so, the title...the title of a book is also the title of a story that i think about sometimes...she goes on a date with a guy. he's cute (is he a bike messenger? does that add to his messenger-ness? i think so)
let's say he's a messenger, and he asks her out and she goes to his apartment where he makes her dinner. and his apartment is nice and there are plants that are well cared for and an aquarium that's super-cool and well cared for and he cooks her dinner (not just dumping spaghetti sauce on pasta) and they watch west side story which is one of her favorite movies (and mine too) and they're under an afghan and their feet are touching and she's thinking "oh we're totally going to make out now" and they never do.
i think they never even go on another date, or he moves or something.
anyway, she talks about the date with her friends and they all decide dinner+movie + afghan + feet toucing = date indeed so i think she wonders why there wasn't any smooching or seeing each other again and she realizes maybe this guy was a sign. a messenger. a messenger of what all guys should be, and how great dates could be. that there should be guys who want to cook for you and watch your favorite movies.
i guess the moral is not settleing.
i bring this up because i just listened to june of 44's "engine takes to the water" record after a day of looking at the p-fork line up and listening to the shins new record (it's fine. they're fine. i mean, they're totally competent and good, but they don't awaken anything in me that craves that record) and 12 years later, i still crave that record.
all those fucked up time changes in "have a safe trip dear"? AWESOME.
granted, some of june of 44's later records are snoozey...but there is something about 'engine' that is just so good. so consuming. i'd like to make every musician listen to it and understand what it's like to record passion.
and back to the messenger?
that's kind of how i feel about new years eve. or at least what happened. in any case, the brief (although really nice and really needed) meeting of dylan j. was pretty great and made me realize the shortcommings in other guys and situations in my life.
it's kind of theraputic when you realize that someone tells you that they're not so great and you're finally able to go "yeah, you're kinda not as great as i thought you were".

oh dear, the hills are on. why an i so addicted to this show? and how do these fools afford chanel purses and mercedes benz's....
they don't DO anything.
and yet i can't stop watching
