eastern market's fire

so...yeah. pretty great weekend. i crammed a lot into it, but i like that. although i neglected my life stuff like laundry and newspaper reading and gardening and general cleaning.
the art market yesterday went pretty well and i'm going to do it again this sunday i hope. sean made a brilliant suggestion about a way to finish some of my paintings so i'm going to try that.
in supremely devastating news:
there was a really severe fire at eastern market this morning around 1:30. it looks bad. really bad. like, the roof caved in bad.
the building itself looks ok but i'm absolutely heartbroken.
what's going to happen to the Canales deli family? and the guy behind the bakery counter who always puts just the right amount of butter on my bagel? and the old gruff man behind the cheese counter who magically turned nice about 6 years ago?
am i going to have to go to fresh fields now for parano cheese?
or the union butcher. who is going to make blue buck pancakes?
oh my god, i'm so upset.
when i lived across from the north side of the market, i could literally stare for hours at that building (designed by adolf clauss. there was an exhibit of his architecture about a year and a hald ago on the GW campus)
i use to drag people there on saturday mornings for the french toast and the pancakes. i'd buy flowers there in the spring and summer and in the fall, i'd get dried chinese lanterns.
on the weekends, there are big flea markets that surround it. i bet they won't be able to have vendors in the shadow of the market. it's going to be worse than when they tore up the sidewalk and replaced the overhang walkway.

god, i hope it's fixed in time for the guys to sell christmas trees 24-7 from thanksgiving to christmas
