oh yeah that place use to be...

i can't find the pattern for batty. i know i had it downstairs last sunday. I want to get all the sewing stuff done by today so i can concentrate on cleaning for devin's return on wednesday.

I was only semi-productive yesterday, mostly due to a hangover-given headache.
KC brought me his old TV yesterday. I think it's going to be the living room TV and move the living room one to my bedroom and donate the small one in my bedroom.
tonight i'm having dinner at the tom sarris orleans house probably for the last time ever. it's closing later this week, so i need to document the steamboat salad bar.
there's so much closing in the city right now. Tom sarris, the tiny semi-crappy-but-i-love-it-anyway movie theatre in Dupont circle where i saw american splendor twice, dr. dremo's...
and the thing is, i know that cities need to change to survive- January 2000 a lot of businesses on the hill closed cause their leases were up. Frenchie's cleaners became starbucks, surly Sheryl's diner became ritz camera, another drycleaning/alteration place became a bank, a japanese restaurant...well, i don't know that anything is there actually...
but dremo's is being torn down in favor of shiny new lux housing. probably the same for tom sarris. the dupont movie theatre has only acknowledged that it's going to be an "exciting new retail opportunity". i just don't know who these people are that are moving into this city.
or maybe i have seen them and i don't like it.
they're the ones that think that the first coffe shop on the hill was x and o.
when it was really roasters on the hill. which became stomping grounds. which became murky coffee.
i guess i like my cities with a little bit of grit and decay. i see beauty in decay. and possibilites. and lately, that's seeming to translate more into cheesecake factories and luxury condos with stainless steel appliances and "2 inch concrete counter tops".
There's a new luxury place being built on the site of the former decatur blue collective (most of those guys have gone to NY or california)that makes me so embarrassed for it every time i pass it. it has these big banners on the wire fence that say stuff like "Views that rock!" "Rad floor plans" in all manner of 'edgy' fonts. it makes me throw up. a lot. it also boasts '2 inch concrete countertops'. which.....is that really a good thing? i've seen some beautiful acid-dyed concrete floors...i guess that's what it would be. i just think of all the skull-cracking and knife dulling opportunities on a concrete countertop.
ok, i have to stop lamenting lost haunts and get back to work.
