making connections
finally have a day to myself. friday night's opening went well. met a lot of people. fielded a lot of 'how'd you do that?' questions. saturday i painted kids faces for almost three hours. let me tell you, i can make one fuck of a butterfly. also- lions. i was very good at various big-cat type faces. there was one kid that i instantly loved when he asked to be made into a peanut butter jar. i also kinda liked this one fan-girl who watched me for half an hour or so and said 'i bet you can paint anything'. she was in second grade. and thought i was 15. she was pretty awesome. i also did a little retail therapy. i kind of hate how excited i was about that shitty fake place. when it got too loud, i popped out into the mall to discover they had a steve & barry's. i didn't fully investigate, but it's good to know. and after the romp, i went to baja fresh (which i have to admit, i love) and it did not sit well in my tummy. i was in ulta (serious retail therapy my friends) i went 'uh oh'. but all in all, thanks fake silver spring. i got home, took a nap, watched some of the 24-hour jackass extravaganza and then went to the black cat for daniel johnston. benjy feree opened. i have to say, benjy is a good showman. there were a bunch of douchebags in the house (which i was a little perplexed over given the line-up). one guy was to my right as there was the usual 'how y'all doing tonight'-ish stage banter and the dude yells 'shut the fuck up'. i turned and stared at him for a good 30 seconds. he (smartly) chose to take his own advice. i didn't hear another peep from him. Daniel J seemed great and happy and i was glad to see that the audience was mostly respectful. after he started playing there was less chatter. i was hoping he might play 'hypno love wheel' but he didn't. it's been a long week of finalizing a presentation i have to give thursday to pitch the idea for various installations in the new mental-health facility so i've been waist-deep in mental health and artists and art therapy so it was kind of a nice capper on the week. also, i was asked yesterday if i wanted to sit on the board of this art-thing that i take part in every time, but i don't know if it will be a conflict of interest with my job. but...yeah. big art connection week for me i guess. heh.
