bethb's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- semantic satiation, catharsis, and dave eggers gotta do a bit of singing hold on: 'c'mon y'all....sing it with me CARWASH' just had to get that out. the radio in the office picks up crappy stations and there's some "jammin'" somethin' or other and they're playing carwash. funny word car wash car wash car wash did you know that when you recite a word over and over and over (kinda like that) to a point that it looses it's meaning to you, it's called "semantic satiation" isn't that boss? i love the fact that that sensation has a...a....a...well, a word. it happens to me with "shoe" and "charm" after i spell or say "shoe" enough times, i wonder if i'm spelling it right. i am, by nature, a bad speller. that's why god'n'webster invented dictionaries. that is also why i will go to great lengths before typing a word that i don't know how to spell...i'm a big fan of "looking it up" i think it's important to hide your ignorance...at least mine. bad grammar, now that's something i just can't be helped at. i hated grammar in school. i never asked questions in school about grammar stuff, so i never really learned it. whoopsie. little did i know. so last weekend, i picked up 1 book on grammar, and another on magazine article writing. now, you might say, well beth b., what about your poor use of puncuation? particularly capitalizing stuff? that is when i will take you aside, and tell you the story of how email has ruined me for propper capitalization. i never capitalize my name....well, hardly ever. i am always beth b. but i always think of email as such an informal thing, that i just kinda throw capitalization into the wind. Except there. and when i emailed brendan canty....who i am going to interview for my next zine, because Marc Nelson (whose name deserves capitals and oh-so-much-more) FUCKING ROCKS MY WORLD! i hate that expression, but marc is truly truly cool. i haven't started the two aforementioned books yet, becuase i've been engrossed in dave egger's 'heartbreaking work of staggering genius'. right now, i'd have to say i *rilllllllllllly* recommend the book. you know what i don't recommend? 'she's come undone' by wally lamb if i can deter ust ONE person from having to read that pile of stink, my suffering will not have been in vain OOh, carwash break 'Keep those fine machines hummin' know what else happened to me yesterday? I had a catharsis...in my car...listening to Lois. i was playing her tape 'Strumpet' and the title song came on. i don't know if it was the temperature in my car, the smell of the city, the fact that i missed Lois at the black cat april 10th, because i was drafting and fucking forgot to look at my calender, and the following morning, as i was driving to work, i let loose the loudest, most anguished scream mt. ranier maryland has ever heard, or the fact that i am feeling kinda sentimental about stuff lately, but i almost cried. actually, i did cry a little, but i was comming from a cocktail party and going to a safeway to go grocery shopping (dress up the next time you go to the grocery store, it's fun!)so i couldn't totally cut free with the tears. it's important to have a catharsis every once in a while. aristotle thought so, and so should you. let's see, what have me learned today.... semantic satiation-boss catharsis- good dave eggers- *le sigh* wally lamb- sucks eggs. not a bad lesson for a sunday morning 08:38:15 - 2000-05-07 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
