tin foil hats make the party
this year i made a christmas/new years mix cd because for the first time i've been able to. and i took great delight in pairing RUN-DMC's 'christmas is' next to angela lansburry singing 'we need a little christmas' from Mame. I hate Mame, but I love that song. The latter half of the disc is new years-y songs (the walkmen, jon spencer blues explosion, camera obscura, death cab for cutie, of course the dismemberment plan) and the all time "wow-does-that-really-sum-it-up" song- Scrawl's '11:59 it's january'. It's a pretty great song and here are the lyrics for ye: january came too soon survived the holidays without you but who are you, you are anyone i wish i knew and tonight i wish i knew every single one of you first day champagne, old acquaintances are far apart, tonight auld lang syne means leave before the kissing starts last year went down the drain they all do really so why complain drink a cup of kindness yet and say goodbye to all regrets it's january 11:59 --- 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-midnight was it a good year do i really need to know cause now it's behind me forever it was a good year because it was such a bad year that this year can only get better last year went down the drain they all do really so why complain drink a cup of kindness yet and say goodbye to all regrets it's january and who are you, you are anyone i wish i knew tonight i wish i knew every single one of you tonight i wish i knew every single one of you tonight i wish i knew ... every single one of you every single one of you (it's january) every single one of you (it's january) every single one of you (it's january) every single one of you (it's january) anyway, in the grand tradition of redundancy....let me state again how much i hate new years eve. love love love new years day. hate hate hate new years eve. the world gets over-run with drunken idiots all relentlessly persuing the Best! Time! Ever!(tm) and it just seems like such a sham. i did enjoy 2000 with the fireworks and standing by the willow trees and the pond on the mall watching the fireworks go up the scaffolding of the washington monument. maybe that's it. maybe this city blew it's party was on the year 2000 new years eve. there was also a bunch of us roving around with noise makers and hats. and you know noisemakers and hats always bring the party.
