good friend, bad friend

I have this friend- B. Christine McD. she's one of those folks that i clicked with pretty much instantaneously. We met in louisville Ky. in march 1996- she was hiring folks for jobs at the virginia shakespeare festival (VSF). she looked at my portfolio and was duly impressed with the botticelli pumpkin and mentioned she was from the doylestown area and we both mentioned the same book and record store we loved.
so, they hired me and off i went to williamsburg virginia for the summer. and it. was. fun. and pretty much ever since then, i think of chris like family.
she's had some stuff happen to her that....i don't know how to explain it. but it would even give dick wolfe pause and for the last 4 or 5 years i guess she's been working with paul taylor doing the unglamourous backstage thing because everything backstage is unglamourous....but she's persevered and seen the world and occassionally will land in this city and when she does, it's a cause to celebrate.
but as any extremely talented, wildly educated, amazingly talented person might want, she wants more. and she wants to teach.
and chris is a born teacher. she has the patience of a saint, the education of....i don't know....30, 40 people rolled into one maybe? and she even was able to teach me how to make a shirt.
she's been applying for jobs. two at schools she's already taught at and for the life of me, i don't know why she's not at W&M, other than steve H is the world's biggest moron. and she didn't get the georgetown job either which would have landed her squarely in this city.
she did get an offer 'tho from a school.
but it's in maine.
and the salary is signifigantly more than georgetown. and she can have a house with a yard.
but it's maine. and one of her friends said "it's maine, not mars" and that's true. and chris is the kind of friend for which you *would* fly to mars, so i have to figure, i'm getting a bargain. just having to get to maine. and she'll have time off during the summer.
i'm so glad she's found a job that will let her have the kind of life she wants....
i'm still a little bit sad it's do far away.
