greetings from chicago, day 2

so...i'm in chicago. it's ridiculously hot. hot people are actually apologizing for the weather hot.
i got in yesterday afternoon and popped off at damen to run into Quimby's where i picked up 'hit it or quit it' (a....i don't know what to call it....a zine mascarading as a zine? a really poorly designed magazine? it started out as a zine, but has a thick glossy full-color photo of miranda july on the cover and a full page full color glossy merge records/spoon ad on the back, and it's bound just like a regular mag (not stapled) but the insides are still shitty-looking xeroxes that harken back to ye olde zine days when i'll admit to having read it with some regularity. i tried to read it this morning while i waited to make coffee, but i threw it down in aggrivation. it's just crappy.
i'm sorry, i loved zines. i use to do a zine, but it's 2006. time to perhaps move past doodley-ink pen handwritten questions and white out. or at least make it have style. HioQi is just a mess.
a 5 dollar mess.
anyway, i had to buy a copy (not had to, wanted to) for ryan as he submitted a comic (last year, btw) and still hasn't recived a copy which in my book = rude.
i also picked up an older schizo and some other stuff. it's pretty much a great place.
then i met mike and we dropped my junk off at his apartment, talked for a bit, drove around the area (humbolt park) and past the place the pitchfork thing is happening (union park) and picked up his gf at her place of employment and went out for really good vietnamese food.
today i went to the museum of contemporary art to see the chris ware exhibit. it's almost all his jimmy corrigan stuff. i like seeing all his fussy blue-pencil lay-in stuff because his final stuff in books always looks so machine-like and perfect.
after the MCA i went to the chicago art institute area, walked around, ate lunch, went to the museum to see the joseph cornell boxes. also they had a lot of Klee which reminds me, i need to see that show at the phillips.
then i walked to the sears tower. (hi heat how are you?) and went to the top.
i have a weird thing about going to the tallest point in whatever city/town i'm in. i don't know why, but i just realized it last week.
maybe it's an automatic attraction? like a no-brainer attraction? maybe i just like heights, who knows.
took the bus back to mike's. he's gone to his gf's so now it's me in his apartment ona friday night....with no television.
i might head back up to the wicker park area which judging by the funny hair and low-slung jeans appears to be the hipster neighborhood.

i like chicago. i have admiration for it's inhabitants because good grief, i can't imagine climbing some of the steps to the el stops in the freezing rain. the el is fast. and loud. and lots of stairs. and very few escalators.
it really makes DC's metro look ultra pussy. or cushy maybe. and quiet.
chicago's bus system, however, is pretty f-ing great.
i'm going to go hop on it now.
