the hold steady, old friends, and the weirdness to be found in small town maryland police blotters.

The hold steady did not disappoint. stateh00d were great...there were one or two songs that i thought "uh, this is getting a little remmy zero" but then i reealized i'm not even sure that i would be able to pick remmy zero out of an audio line up, but mostly stateh00d were great. clark is so freakin' fantastic. and is starting to sound kind of line j. robbins which i don't hate at all.
the second band (the big sleep) i wasn't so into....
i had great hopes for them when i saw the bassist used an Orange head on her amp. with the exception of i think philly's Burning Brides, there's never been an Orange head on stage i didn't like the sounds coming through it. Hot snakes, Rocket, Jehu....jon spencer.....orange heads all.
the big sleep made me wonder if i still have my laughing hyenas records. also? they used weird, severely unflattering lighting. just say'n.
many favorite old friends were seen, from eric, joe and clark in statehood to running into franz from Anti-social music who is now playing keyboards with the hold steady which was a delightful surprise and he was SO fun to watch play. leigh was there, too. it was actually really nice to see her and talk about chicago.

i saw lifter-puller open for burning airlines once at the black cat. i don't know if i thought as highly of craig finn then as i do now. he's a pretty consummate performer too. when the hold steady played, it got kinda duuude-fest. with three "U"'s. also? a lot of air guitar......a LOT of air guitar. and some morons on stage who were promptly escorted off stage. except at the end when the douchenozzles took over the stage and you couldn't see the hold steady at all. i've discussed how much i fucking hate that. kids? stay off the stage, ok? it's not your moment. also? why not leave the palm pilots at home? give it a try....or leave them in your pocket becuase you know it's not going to record the show well at all and seriously? youtube probably doesn't need it anyway.

kc sent me this thing his mom mailed him from his towns "pennypincher" or some similarly named thrifty haus-frau tabloid. it's the police beat section. i can't get over the comic gold to be found within. there are 22 items and not a bad one in the bunch. whomever writes up the report obviously has a sense of humour check these out:
*two tussling toddlers were allegedly spotted in the 400 block of (street)
*a sick mole was reportedly found walking in circles on (street)
*someone was allegedly dancing "the moonwalk" in and out of traffic along EdgewoodRd, Edgewood.
*as they were reportedly reposessing a vehicle from an edgewood residence, vehicle recovery workers noticed a 90 year-old female hiding in the back seat
*a Pylesville woman reportedly became stuck in an upside-down position between her bed and the wall
then the second to last item is this:
*Someone's wife was reported missing from (street/town)

talk about burrying the lead! "someone's wife"??? that's like the one thing that could legitamitely be included on a police blotter.
not that a sick mole walking in circles isn't news.
also, with the reposessed car, they don't say it's the car's owner in the back seat. is it just someones granma hanging out? and they lady stuck between her bed and the wall....she was able to call the police for help but not able to free herself? what was she doing that she ended up 1) between the bed and the wall 2) upside down?
and the "alleged" moonwalker....was it the dance that was alleged? could they infact have been doing the twist or the robot or the mashed potato and the person who phoned it in just wasn't sure?
so many questions unanswered....i think i need more of these police beat things . that's for sure.
